Math by McCarthy

As much as I used to admire National Review, since WFB stepped down, it’s basically become a rag that occasionally publishes someone worth reading. And, as far as I can tell, none of those people write on the Corner.

Case in point: this little gem on immigration from Andy McCarthy:

Mind you, I am not resolutely opposed to the granting at some point of a humanitarian amnesty, if the illegal population were reduced by 90 - 95 percent. After all, we already have asylum laws — a form of humanitarian relief by which we permit people who would not otherwise qualify to reside here.

Let me get this straight: Here McCarthy is–I suppose–attempting to show he’s not a cold-blooded bastard by saying, “Well, we don’t have to deport ALL of those people.”

If we work with the figures most generally tossed around, there are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in this country. Most of those immigrants work. They may or may not pay income taxes, (mind you, if they were allowed to stay here legally, they would) but their labor undeniably contributes to the economy and they pay sales tax on anything they buy in the country. Yet, if McCarthy had his druthers, he’d get rid cut that 12 million down 10.8-11.4 million.

But, who’s going to take all their jobs once they are deported? Even if we assume the patently absurd–that all of the able-bodied unemployed would magically get off their asses and work these (shitty) jobs and there would be ZERO job growth–with the current figures estimating U.S. unemployment at 8.5 million, you’re looking at a job deficit of 2.3-2.9 million!

How in the hell is that good for the economy?

Can we hire one of these illegals to teach McCarthy subtraction?

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

Man Jailed After Daughter Fails To Graduate High School

Brittany Gegner had a history of truancy and eventually it caught the attention of the legal system. When she was 17 - and legally a minor - the case came before a judge and her father was ordered to ensure that she earn her high school equivalency diploma or face the consequences….The imprisoned man’s current wife fears her husband will lose his job because of his incarceration and claims they did everything they could to keep the girl in class. “You’d take her to school and she’d go out the other door,” Stephanie Gegner complains.

A hearing on a motion to reconsider the sentence will be held Friday. Until then, Brian Gegner remains in jail, all because his daughter didn’t graduate high school.

An Australian man and his adult daughter went public about their incestuous relationship after having a baby together, as it emerged that a previous child of the couple died a few days after birth.

John Deaves, 61, and his daughter Jenny, 39, have a 9-month-old daughter but have been banned from having sex after a court convicted the pair on two counts of incest.

“The couple are being monitored by the relevant authorities,” a South Australia state police spokesman told Reuters today.

The case provoked international media attention when the couple appeared on Australia’s 60 Minutes programme to explain their relationship, which began when the two were re-united eight years ago.

I might be able to say that as consenting adults, however depraved, they should be allowed to do as they wish. But kids?????

[T]he Australian Associated Press said on Monday that court documents showed they had another child in 2001 who died from congenital heart problems.

Congenital heart problems? Really? They’re lucky they didn’t have flipper babies!!!

Arkansas Legalizes Pedophilia, Reconsiders

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas’ marriage-age crisis is over. A law that mistakenly allowed anyone — even toddlers — to marry with parental permission was repealed by a measure signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Mike Beebe, ending months of embarrassment for the state and confusion for county clerks.

Months of embarrassment? This is Arkansas. When have they not been an embarrassment?

Lawmakers didn’t realize until after the end of last year’s regular session that a law they approved, intended to establish 18 as the minimum age for marriage, instead removed the minimum age to marry entirely. An extraneous ”not” in the bill allowed anyone who was not pregnant to marry at any age with permission.

The bill read: ”In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is not pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage.”

I’m surprised they managed to catch the problem. In March 2006, the State of Arkansas Department of Education goal — yes, goal — for high school (9-12) literacy proficiency by the end of the year was 35.5%.

Next on the agenda: No Legislator Left Behind.

King of the Cubicle Farm

So, the Prez headed to the Boss’s home town this week — Freehold, N.J., that is, made famous in this particularly depressing tune from the mid-80s — to visit a debt counseling agency and give a “major economic speech.” If you were watching live, what you saw was the Commander-in-Chief standing amidst rows of cubicles filled with what looked like PBS pledge-drive volunteers on headsets, ready to take your calls:

INTENDED MESSAGE:  We’re so busy doing the good work of helping Americans in hard times that we don’t even take a break when the President drops by.

ACTUAL MESSAGE:  This lamest of lame duck leaders has been rendered so utterly irrelevant that he commands less attention than Bob from Accounting.

“Hey girl, what’d you do last night?…No shit. Aight, aight, cool…What’s that? Oh, I don’t know, they got the President or some shit talking here…Yeah, in my office. Bitch is being loud standing RIGHT next to my cubicle…I know! Like, why they got to be all up in my bidness? Anyway, we still going to Temptations tonight?”
