Here in our nation’s fine capital, we have neighborhoods the city deems so dangerous they establish checkpoints just to enter them. We have countless incidents of murders and violent crime. And we are expecting an uptick of <strike>Robin Hood-like thieves to descend upon</strike> new arrivals into the city come January. So how are the DC police responding to this sad state, er District, of affairs? Cracking down on jaywalkers:

Police are stopping motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and also singling out jaywalkers for citations, said Michael Farrell, transportation planner from the Council of Governments.

Dangerous drivers should be stopped and cited for, well, dangerous driving. And I’ll even say that failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk when they have the right of way is a stoppable offense. However, pedestrians who aren’t paying attention as they cross a busy city street, well…it’s either Jeebus’s will or Darwin thinning the herd. Pick your theory, I’m fine with either one.

Apparently, gun buyers took this post a little too seriously:

HOUSTON — A week after the election of Barack Obama, gun buyers across the country are voting with their feet, flocking to gun stores to stock up on assault rifles, handguns and ammunition.

Some say they are worried that the incoming Obama administration will attempt to reimpose the ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004. Others fear the loss of their right to own handguns. A few say they are preparing to protect themselves in the event of a race war.

But whatever the reason, gun dealers in red and blue states alike say they’ve never seen anything like the run on weaponry they’ve been experiencing since Election Day— surpassing even the panic buying in the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. (Emphasis added)

Damn it, Jethro! We’s gots to git us one a dem ay-salt rifles in case dem Izlamick nigras get all high fallutin’!

Churches, too, are feeling the sharp rise in demand. Remember what Jebus taught: thou shalt bear assault rifles:

At the Memorial Shooting Center in Houston, which shares a building with a church, managers said they sold out of assault weapons a day after the election and are now adding new orders, at more than $1,000 each, to a monthlong waiting list.

I’m just wondering whom the “Memorial” refers to. The heroic fallen customer-parishioners who died at the range? That terrible Easter morning when the kids from the “special” Sunday school class got into the church armory? Or maybe it was for young Ezekiel who was shot because his drunk dad Jed mistook him for a deer. (Admittedly, he did have the same wide-eyed look on his face just before he died.)

I’m all for gun rights, people. But don’t get your panties in a bunch just yet, mkay?

So says Senator Chuck Schumer, the democrat from New York (pardon my redundancy). Schumer appeared on FoxNews last week, championing his support for reinstating the so-called “Fairness Doctrine.” Schumer summed up his argument by comparing free speech to pornography:

Do you think we should allow people to put pornography on the air? Absolutely not, particularly on television and radio. . . The very same people who don’t want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC to limit pornography on the air. I am for that. I think pornography should be limited.

Watch the interview here.

Putting our (ardent) support for pornography here at F&S aside for a moment, I think it’s safe to say that Schumer is a complete idiot. We all know that the democrats want to invoke the Fairness Doctrine as justification for muzzling conservative talk radio. But comparing talk radio to pornography? That analogy falls flat on its face once the audience realizes that Rush Limbaugh ≠ Tera Patrick (SFW). This just goes to show that politicians will seriously say anything, no matter how asinine, to convince us that they know what they’re talking about.

To be fair, Barack Obama has gone on record saying that he will not seek to re-implement the Fairness Doctrine. But would he veto such a bill sent to him from the DNC-controlled congress? Would he, after galvanizing the nation with his message of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity, put party solidarity before free speech?

In an effort to convince the next president how serious this issue is, we present him with this illustrative lolcat:

Special Thanks to Nicole Trafton for the lolcat.

I don’t smoke any more–not that there’s anything wrong with it. It helped me lighten up a lot (no pun intended) and I became a happier person because of it.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court, in its infinite child-rearing wisdom, bravely acted to ensure that “the children” are protected from naughty words. The Court heard a case involving an FCC indecency rule that prohibits the use of expletives on broadcast television during daytime and prime time evening hours. Given the current make-up of the Court, it seems all-but-certain to be upheld:

U.S. Solicitor General Gregory G. Garre said the strict regulation of broadcast TV preserved it as a “safety zone” for families with children, particularly in an era of unrestrained free-speech rules on the Internet and on cable and satellite TV. “Broadcast TV is the one place where Americans can turn on the TV at 8 o’clock and . . . not expected to be bombarded with indecent language,” he said.

He was defending a 4-year-old policy of the Federal Communication Commission to impose heavy fines on broadcasters who put on the air even a single expletive. He referred to the banned language as “the F-word” and “the S-word.”

“The F-word is one of the most graphic, explicit and vulgar words in the English language for sexual activity,” he said.

Graphic? Explicit? Please. High school health books are more graphic and explicit than Bono or Cher dropping the F-bomb. However, when it comes to vulgarity, I think there are plenty of words and phrases that top the F-word in their tastelessness. “Dirty Sanchez,” for example, is an odious (or odorous) descriptor for a scatological act. “Donkey-punch” describes a fairly degrading bedroom manoeuvre (unless maybe you’re into degradation-hey, no judgment). I had to look up “Superman That Ho” on UrbanDictionary.com to learn just what exactly is involved in the act of supermanning a ho - I don’t recommend anybody trying it on any woman. Ever.

These are tasteless phrases, to be sure, but as far as I’m aware, none of them contain any expletives that the FCC considers unsuitable for prime-time television. Say what you will about the decline of American high culture, or of the need to protect “the children” from smutty adult content. Those are judgments that I leave up to parents. First amendment rights should never be sacrificed simply because a few words make some people blush around their children.

UPDATE: Justice Antonin Scalia, in his argument supporting the FCC rule, cited a recent scientific study that proved with 95% certainty that exposure to the “f-word” on television greatly increases a child’s likelihood of encountering several maladies in their lifetimes. The problems range from drug dependency and behavioral problems, to teenage pregnancy, homosexuality, gambling addiction, depression and suicidal ideation, most forms of cancer, careers in political journalism, persistent gonorrhea, and spontaneous human combustion.

TV personality? Sure. Columnist? Why not. But THIS?!?!??!:
Even in defeat, John McCain bequeathed an invaluable gift to his running mate, Sarah Palin: the national prominence that could allow her to compete for the GOP’s presidential nomination in 2012.
Dear Jeebus, NO!
UPDATE: What’s that place black people come from, governor?
